Australian Qualifications Framework
The diagram above shows the different levels of study you can pursue after finishing school, starting with Level 1 (Certificate I) and going all the way up to Level 10 (Doctoral degree).
Depending on your interests and the entry requirements for the course and institution you're aiming for, you could apply for courses from Levels 1-7.
'Entry requirements' or 'pre-requisite subjects' usually refer to the subjects you've already studied and the results you've achieved. Some courses might also need you to have completed a previous course first, e.g. you normally need to have completed a Bachelor's degree before you can start a Master's degree.

Preparing for tertiary study
Preparing for tertiary study
If you’re currently at school, you may need to apply for some tertiary studies through the relevant Tertiary Admissions Centre.
Each state and territory has their own application process for tertiary studies. For example, if you want to apply for a course in both Queensland and Victoria, you will need to complete two separate application forms.
You can find more information about the Tertiary Admissions Centres for each state and territory in the links below:
- ACT: Universities Admissions Centre (UAC)
- New South Wales: Universities Admissions Centre (UAC)
- Northern Territory: South Australian Tertiary Admission Centre (SATAC) and University Admissions Centre
- Queensland: Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC)
- South Australia: South Australian Tertiary Admission Centre (SATAC)
- Tasmania: Tasmanian Assessments, Standards and Certification (TASC)
- Victoria: Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). You may also like to explore events hosted by VTAC.
- Western Australia: Tertiary Institution Service Centre (TISC)
Important
If you are already studying at the tertiary level, or the course you're interested in does not require you to apply through a tertiary admissions centre e.g. many TAFE level courses, remember to check with the relevant institution directly about their admission process.
