We understand that getting your kids to school can sometimes be challenging.

However, regular school attendance is crucial for their overall development and success.

By collaborating with your child and their school, you can help create a supportive and motivating environment that encourages them to learn, grow, and thrive.

Here are some valuable tips to assist you in ensuring your child or children attend school more consistently:

1. Establish a routine

  • Make a daily plan so your child knows when to get up, get ready, and leave for school.
  • Ensure your child gets enough sleep each night. They are more likely to be ready to learn when they are well-rested.
  • Prepare school bags, uniforms, and other school materials the night before. This helps you avoid rushing and feeling stressed, making it easier to start the day on time.
  • The early years of school are the best opportunity to settle into a routine of regular attendance. Changing routines down the track after they've been established is much harder.

2. Build positive relationships and attitudes towards school

  • Encourage your child to have a positive attitude toward school. Talk about the exciting things they'll learn and the friends they'll meet or see.
  • Show interest in your child's school experiences. Ask about their day and what they learned.
  • Encourage your child to make good friends at school. Friends can make school a happier place.

3. Encourage a love for learning

  • Celebrate your child's achievements at school, both big and small. This can motivate them to go to school.
  • Make learning fun. Find ways to make it enjoyable and interesting.

4. Address challenges

  • If your child faces challenges at school, such as bullying or difficulty with schoolwork, address them straightway.
  • While occasional absences due to illness are expected, try limiting other absences. Make appointments after school hours when possible.

5. Seek help

  • Meet with your child's teachers to stay updated on how they are doing at school. This will help you support them.
  • If your child struggles at school or misses school often, ask teachers, counsellors or tutors for help. They can help you support your child.
