How sick is too sick for school?

Deciding if your child is too sick for school can be challenging. Balancing their health and education isn't easy, and figuring out the right thing to do can be hard.

So, how sick is too sick?

Take a moment and ask yourself:

  • Is my child well enough to participate in the day's activities comfortably?
  • Could my child pass on their illness to other children or staff?
  • Will my child's teacher be able to look after them without affecting other children?
  • If I felt the way my child does, would I stay home?

To help you decide whether to keep your child at home or send them to school, check out the "Too sick for school?" resource created by Ask Your Pharmacist. This resource has a great checklist of symptoms and next steps based on the illness.

If you're still unsure, speak to your doctor or pharmacist. They can provide advice based on your child's symptoms and overall health.

Trust your instincts. If your child seems too unwell to benefit from school or could make others sick, it's best to keep them at home. If they only have mild symptoms, then going to school is the best choice. Making the right decision helps keep your child and others healthy.
