Saver Plus Story

Saver Plus story – Johanna, full time carer for her granddaughter Edie

Caring for a young child becomes a full-time job when you’re being “a mother” for the second time much later in life. For Johanna* taking on the role of caring for her granddaughter Edie* was not only physically and mentally exhausting, it was expensive too.

She first heard about Saver Plus through a local parents’ group and joined the program so that she could prepare for Edie’s start at school the following year.

As a child, Johanna had learnt that “you don’t spend what you don’t have”, but adding the cost of raising a child to a retiree budget was a big challenge.

The MoneyMinded workshops that she completed as part of Saver Plus reminded her of some money saving skills she already knew and introduced her to lots of clever new savings tricks and tips.

Having grown up always wearing second hand clothes, it was important to Johanna that Edie could start school with a brand-new uniform and wouldn’t be singled out as “being poor”. Saver Plus helped her to do this.

Edie loves swimming and as Johanna lives near the coast, it’s important for her to be safe around water. She was able to use part of the money that she received from ANZ to have swimming lessons.
