2017 International Women's Day, Tamworth
The combined VIEW Clubs of Tamworth celebrated International Women’s Day in Tamworth on Saturday 11th March with members from Gunnedah, Manilla and Narrabri clubs also attending.
Zone Councillor Beryl Pike opened the day and welcomed everyone then Local Elder Yvonne Kent then gave the Welcome to Country on behalf of the local Kamilaroi/Gomeroi Tribe.
Local musician Hayden Davey then accompanied himself on the guitar to entertain those present and Judy Sills (Gunnedah Evening) then provided everyone with a brief overview of the history of VIEW from its foundation in 1960, by George Forbes, manager of The Smith Family at the time to the present day when VIEW Australia-wide donates more than $1million per year to The Smith Family.
Local Learning for Life worker, Cindy Pearce then outlined some of the programs used to help improve the educational outcomes of some of the students.
Following lunch Lucy Haslam – spokesperson, Director and Co-Founder of United in Compassion gave the members and guests an overview of how her life changed in 2010 as a result of her son Dan’s diagnosis of bowel cancer in his early twenties. Lucy has many people supporting her including researchers, doctors, politicians etc., and she has worked tirelessly over the intervening years since Dan’s diagnosis, organising symposiums and workshops with the medical profession, media, politicians, bureaucrats, people with cancer and other debilitating conditions to have trials on the use of cannabis conducted and ultimately legalised for medicinal use.
She is aware that the number of people using cannabis medicinally across Australia is more than 100,000, however they are currently using it illegally so Lucy and her team are working towards ensuring that this situation is changed.
We are looking forward to hearing more about Lucy’s work when she speaks to us at Convention in Tamworth in September.
