Four friends and their legacy
“I came from a family of seven children of working class parents. There was never much money in the family. I was the only one to complete secondary school – and get a scholarship to go on university,” said Peter K.
When Peter K, Jill, Doreen and Peter W met at a recent Smith Family event, they found out they had quite a lot in common with each other. Despite coming from all walks of life, they discovered they are all currently supporting students on the Learning for Life program. And the most powerful thing they share in common was a decision to leave a gift in their Wills. These gifts will help the next generation of disadvantaged Australians with their education.
“Education made a huge difference in my life. And it is one of the reasons why I support The Smith Family now and I want to help for a bit longer – even if I’m not here!” Doreen agrees with Peter.
“Education means everything to me,” she says. “If you can be given the chance as a young person to stay at school and graduate, the door is open for you for the rest of your life
“As I don’t have any of children of my own, I’m delighted that other young Australians will receive the gift of education when I’m gone,” said Doreen.
As someone who has been a teacher most of my life, it’s very important to me that I give kids who don’t have the opportunity, a chance to develop their own skills.
Jill, Doreen’s friend of many years is leaving a gift in her Will in memory of her father. “He didn’t have the benefit of a good education. He wanted to be a doctor, but had to leave school at 14. I know that he was always frustrated that he could not follow his dreams.
“That’s why I’m setting up a scholarship in his name to support Indigenous students in Western Australia, where I grew up.” As Peter W said, “As someone who has been a teacher most of my life, it’s very important to me that I give kids who don’t have the opportunity, a chance to develop their own skills.
“And why did I choose to leave a gift in my Will to The Smith Family? Well, I can’t take it with me! That’s the first thing! And I think their work is important.
