Volunteer with The Smith Family

Join our community of volunteers who are passionate about helping young Australians overcome educational inequality caused by poverty.

When children can participate fully in their education, it opens their minds to a world of opportunity and positive change. Supporting them to succeed at school has a lasting impact on their lives and future generations.

The Smith Family welcomes applications to volunteer from anyone who wants to make a difference, regardless of education or experience. Please note that in most cases, volunteers must be over 18 years of age.

We offer volunteer opportunities nationwide to suit various interests, skills, and schedules.

Show current volunteer opportunities for

Learning Club tutors

The Smith Family’s Learning Clubs provide a safe and supportive learning environment (usually held at a school or library) where students can get help with their schoolwork or participate in activities that strengthen their academic and social skills. Students are directly assisted by dedicated volunteer Learning Club tutors, outside of school hours, once a week for approximately 18 weeks.

Volunteer recruitment happens throughout the year, but predominately between December – July.

iTrack mentors

The Smith Family’s iTrack program provides students in years 9–11 with an opportunity to connect and chat online with a volunteer mentor who can give them a fresh, unbiased perspective about workplaces, further study, career opportunities, and more. Mentoring pairs chat for approximately 18 weeks at various times of the day.

Volunteer recruitment happens between March - July.

Administration and customer service volunteers – various (virtual and in-house)

The Smith Family’s Administration and Customer Service volunteers provide administrative support to various teams across the organisation. Tasks vary from role to role and might include data entry, research and project support, document processing, and answering phone queries. Roles range from short-term to ongoing and are located in Smith Family offices and/or remotely e.g. from the comfort of your home.

Volunteer recruitment happens at various times of the year.

Our volunteers tell us, in this video, why they love being part of our family.

Amanda, a volunteer Learning Clubs Tutor, with one of our Learning Clubs says she gets a buzz from volunteering, feeling like she’s doing something worthwhile.

Ha, another volunteer Tutor, says: "I actually look forward to the time that I give here every week because I get so much more than what I give. It's only an hour and a half of my time, and that's nothing in comparison to what is actually achieved when you're helping these children."

John, who volunteers in one of our operation centres, feels like he is contributing to a great cause doing what he does best.
