Empowered and impassioned by education
Now in his second year of university, Liam’s still buried in a book most days as he journeys towards completion of a Chemistry degree. He looks back on the hurdles he has overcome, with the support of his sponsor and the Learning for Life program he joined in secondary school.
“During primary school, I was always found in a book and was top of my class in mathematics,” Liam remembers.
“My interests were reading mystery and horror genres, being inquisitive. This has continued to this very day where a book typically lays on my bedside table.”
The significance of education was clear to Liam from an early age – that it would be his way to break the cycle of disadvantage and explore new paths.
“In Grade 4, I was already asking teachers if there were alternatives to compulsory excursions that were costly at the time.
“Neither of my parents had stable employment ever since I was born but always tried to make ends meet. My family could never afford to spare any money. I missed out on a lot of extracurriculars, excursions, and access to technology.
“I was approached early in my secondary schooling by Mara. She’s a Learning for Life Coordinator from the Smith Family. Mara mentored me and provided great support to me.”
The Learning for Life sponsorship meant that Liam’s family could buy the basics that all students need, but living in disadvantage stops some students from having. “I finally had my own pens and my own books to write on,” Liam reflects.
Liam was also able to participate in the Optus Donate Your Data initiative. The program provides students with free pre-paid mobile service. Internet access is an essential digital tool for modern schooling. Liam explains, “The program gave me free internet access on my phone to view my schoolwork and submit assignments. This alleviated the financial stress of paying for data as it can quickly add up and is certainly not in my budget.”
But it wasn’t just financial assistance that was important for Liam. He was touched by the support and the letters he received from his sponsor.
“I have received cards from my sponsor. I do relish this, as it only motivates me more. Given my experience with adversity, I feel more empowered to propel myself through my tertiary education, knowing that there are people with great care who are backing me through every step.”
With his sponsor and The Smith Family in his corner, and with an unwavering passion and curiosity for learning, Liam’s excelled.
“Being granted the Learning for Life scholarship enabled me to continue studying and become the Dux of the school,” beams Liam.
The first in his family to finish high school and go to university, Liam hopes to teach Biology and Chemistry (after enjoying his time at university, of course).
It’s a huge step for any young person, and Liam felt overwhelmed at first – but he’s quickly settled in.
“The past two years have been hectic,” reflects Liam.
“I’ve grown in many ways. Education has been the key tool and driving factor for overcoming barriers and breaking through adversity.
“Both the emotional and financial support from the Smith Family made my education feel meaningful, allowing me to be excited to attend school every day. I feel proud knowing there are still amazing people in this world willing to give back to their communities. I want to do the same for my community and raise the aspiration of others. Thank you!”
