Running for a reason

18 April 2019
Andrew Jones

Andre Jones grew up in a single income household so understands first-hand how difficult it can be to keep up in school when money is tight. Now, at 57, retired navy officer Andre has decided in his first year of retirement to give back.

Starting from the MCG on March 10th, Andre is running around Australia solo - THE ENTIRE THING! He’s raising funds for four causes he’s passionate about, one of those being The Smith Family.

"My childhood was not so rosy – separated parents and all that," Andre said. "Growing up in the ‘60’s and 70’s were tough for a single immigrant mother raising two children with no government/welfare funding. The Smith Family were there on many occasions, helping us and other families in need.

"Today, their great work focuses on disadvantaged children, and doing what they can to assist in getting a decent education. This is my small way to pay back the assistance they showed us when in need."

By the time Andre finishes in February 2020 he will have run 15,000km, all whilst pushing a 60kg buggy full of his supplies, a truly incredible effort.

Andre hopes to raise $15,000 for The Smith Family to help disadvantaged children succeed at school – “it’s only $1 per km!”. His efforts will fund our educational programs to assist children with their literacy, numeracy and all around confidence in their own abilities. We wish Andre all the best on his amazing adventure and we can’t thank him enough for his support.
