Chenoa, aged 11, is the eldest of four children. She’s the mother hen of the family and loves to help her mum, Karmilya, care for her younger sister who has cystic fibrosis. When it comes to homework, Karmilya has her hands full and can’t help her children as much as she would like to. Before The Smith Family’s help, Chenoa had fallen behind at school.
Everything changed when Chenoa and her six-year-old brother Seth, started attending Learning Club. Getting support with their homework from our trained volunteer tutors has boosted their determination. It has also helped Seth to find his voice at school.
Lately she's [Chenoa] actually thriving. I think she's learnt that she wants to better herself.
“I had parent-teacher interviews and I was so worried … [Turns out] Seth has come out of his shell and he's the smartest kid in the class. The teacher just can't get enough of him. I was like, ‘Are you serious? You're talking about the same kid?’” said Karmilya.
“I reckon Learning Club brought him out more, because he was very quiet [before] ... He loves Learning Club!”
It has helped Chenoa too. Having one-to-one support from our tutors has shown her what she is capable of and it has really boosted her determination.
“Chenoa's always been borderline – just good at school. Lately she's actually thriving. I think she's learnt that she wants to better herself,” said Karmilya.
After seeing Chenoa grow so much, her Learning for Life Coordinator has given her the opportunity to step into a leadership role at Learning Club. And Chenoa couldn’t be prouder.
