Lockie’s behaviour has improved since Learning Club

20 November 2018

It’s hard for a child to go to school and feel they can’t follow what is on the board. Lockie tried his hardest, but he couldn’t keep up. Eventually the frustration made him lose focus and he became disruptive in class. So Lockie joined one of our Learning Clubs and now his confidence is sky-high and he has a new outlook at school.

“Lockie always complained that he was lacking in his school work,” said Lockie’s step-mum, Kira.

“We thought Learning Club would be a great experience for him to learn more, be with his friends and do things that he likes to do as well.”

I used to feel like I was behind, but now I can keep up. I really like getting to play games with my friends and have fun.

Struggling each day at school can leave students feeling disheartened and unmotivated. Our Learning Clubs provide a safe space outside of school for students to complete their homework with support from volunteer tutors.

Our tutors create a lively atmosphere, with games and activities that make learning fun. And being able to socialise with other students is great for disadvantaged students who often feel excluded.

“Reading and writing are hard,” said Lockie. “The tutors help me practise reading at Learning Club, so it gets a bit easier for me. I get help with my writing and maths as well.

“I used to feel like I was behind, but now I can keep up. I really like getting to play games with my friends and have fun.

Now Lockie has even taken on a leadership role in one of the club projects and this new confidence is coming through at school too. Kira has seen a huge transformation in his attitude and behaviour since he started attending Learning Club. And it is all thanks to the wonderful supporters and volunteers who make our learning programs possible.

“Lockie has been more confident with reading and doing his maths work. He comes home and tells me how exciting his day was and what he did during the day,” said Kira.

“Learning Club is not just important for his education, but also for his confidence. It has made him confident with his friends and at home even, as well as in school.”

School is important to me because when I grow up I want to have a good life.
