Bookmarks of gratitude
Having the skill of literacy allows a child to write the story between dreams and a successful adulthood.
Every child deserves the chance to learn to read. It leads a child to not only enjoy books, but to also build a better connection with school. For many children experiencing poverty, having strong literacy skills allows them to create a future of success at school and later in their careers.
Our out-of-school reading program student2student supports students to develop their reading skills.
When students first enter student2student, their reading level can be up to 2 to 3 years behind their peers. The program matches students with a peer buddy. A few times a week, they will read the same books together online or over the phone.
With the buddy’s support, a student can improve their reading skills and learning foundation. This gives the student the chance to reach a skill level that’s on par with their schoolmates.
Recently student2student participants and their buddies wrote messages of ‘thanks’ on bookmarks for each other. As you can read on the bookmarks, the program means so much more than having someone to read with.
So, thank you. Your support for programs like student2student is creating pages for young students to fill with stories of new skills and friendships.
