Painting bright futures at SmArts ArtCastle

SKS

Multi-coloured portraits line the gallery walls – the visual end to three days of work by a group of proud young artists. In front of her artwork, a smiling young achiever stands proud. Aila-Dawn had arrived unsure of what to expect at SmArts ArtCastle. By the end, she was ready to paint a future in the arts – and the future’s looking bright!

“I wasn’t sure at first, but this program has awakened my love for art and made me realise becoming an artist is something I definitely want to do,” she shares.

Young Australians like Aila–Dawn are the dreamers and creators of their own futures. But for some, poverty makes them go without supplies or access to learning opportunities. This limits their ability to reach their potential

Generous people like you help students overcome these barriers. Your support helps students like Aila-Dawn access our out-of-school education programs, such as SmArts.

SmArts Artcastle is a three day educational program for high school students interested in the creative arts. Made possible by your support, SmArts offers students the same tools and teachings as their peers. It enables them to hone their skills and build their confidence. This improves their connection with school and ability to get the most out of education, which every student deserves.

At the recent SmArts ArtCastle, hosted in partnership with NSW TAFE Hunter Street, students painted and sculpted vibrant self-portraits under the guidance of professionals in the industry. It was a chance for the young dreamers to immerse in art practice. The types of careers in the art world became bigger and more accessible.

The Smith Family’s Programs Coordinator Deb has seen first-hand how SmArts shows students the many shades of careers there are in the art industry.

“Through this program students are exposed to various art mediums and explore what kind of careers might be available to them in the industry, be it as a curator, a teacher, or a professional artist,” she explains.

Throughout SmArts ArtCastle, Aila-Dawn felt surrounded by support. The mentors encouraged Aila-Dawn to express herself. And because of supporters like you, SmArts created a space for Aila-Dawn to build her confidence and craft her future.

“When I lost interest in class my SmArts teacher asked me why. I said that the painting didn’t feel like it was mine. She replied, ‘Make it yours then. It’s art.’ And that was my favourite part. A teacher had never told me that I couldn’t go wrong with art,” says Aila-Dawn.

During the program, students spent quality time learning from art industry professionals. Along with mentorship, this provided students with a view of how creative practice could apply to their futures. Knowing more about career options connects the students with their education. Their focus on an exciting career in the arts has a chance to grow stronger.

This was the case for Aila-Dawn – future artist. She’s got a fresh outlook on school after a glimpse of an artistic career. Aila-Dawn hopes others will take these opportunities too.

“I believe it’s important because it reignites the passion for art that students tend to lose throughout school,” she beams. “To other students who are thinking of participating - go for it. This is an amazing experience that involves your imagination and interests. It gives you time to grow in a great environment with many fresh artists.”
